Our Playing Together

The Prayerful Life No. 87

Oct 27, 2014

Saying For Today: That person has found, in the detachment from pleasure, a deep and abiding playfulness with Life, with others, and one that is not contrary to sadness or hurt, but one with it.

Brian K. Wilcox, a Chaplain, vowed Contemplative in the Christian tradition, Associate of Greenbough House of Prayer, and Postulant of the Order of St. Anthony the Great, offers an interspiritual work focusing on cultivating the Heart of Compassion. His book of mystical Love poetry is An Ache for Union: Poems on Oneness with God through Love. Brian integrates wisdom from the major spiritual Paths. May you always know that you are blessed!

When the Sacred in me
plays with the Sacred in You -
beautiful Music.
What lovely Music
we make, my Friend!
Last night,
a symphony arose
within our arms,
and all we could do
was remain silent together,
stunned and adoring what our sharing
can create.

I want a faith that enjoys playfulness, that laughs, that tells jokes, that acts a little odd and crazy, that can be gleefully irreverent. A deeply spiritual being overflows with joy; gladness seems to seep through his or her pores, flow from his or her eyes, touch through his or her hands. That person has found, in the detachment from pleasure, a deep and abiding playfulness with Life, with others, and one that is not contrary to sadness or hurt, but one with it. So, he or she may surprise you when such bliss arises right out of a moment when you would least expect it. Such bliss confounds, for persons attached to pleasure will never fathom the prayerful persons' gladness.

Underlying all forms of worship, all gods and goddesses, is the desire to love and be loved, not that there is some being demanding worship, as though he or she would need such attention. We worship, for the need and will to love is essential to our being and living together kindly and in goodwill. Worship is never a private matter, for that inspiration and action to worship belongs to us all. In worship, true, spiritual worship, I find my heart drawn to the realization, gladsome and freeing, that my heart is everyone's heart and everyone's heart is my heart.
